About the Team
All the Nurse’s and Clinical support workers at Najurally Centre wear uniform.
All staff carry keys, alarm and ID badge so you know who they are.
Sometimes students will visit the ward.
They might want to do work with you to help them learn.
When you arrive you will be allocated a staff team. Primary and Associate Nurse and two Support Workers.
Staff have to follow a code which means they must be polite, keep to confidentiality, respectful, and least restrictive.
What is the Najurally Centre?
The Najurally Centre is an Inpatient Assessment and Treatment Unit.
People come to the Centre when they need support which cannot be done at home.
People may be admitted to the Najurally Centre for:
- Medication changes.
- Decline in mental health.
- Increased challenging behaviour.
At the Najurally Centre you will have your own bedroom and bathroom.
There are flexi rooms, a conservatory and a lounge for all patients to share.
There is also a kitchen and a sensory room that patients can use.
What will happen now?
72 hour assessment
This will start when you arrive at the Najurally Centre.
During this we will assess:
- Blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, oxygen levels, height and weight
- Eating and Drinking
- Behaviour and mental health
- Personal cares
- Sleep
Observations
When you are admitted to the Najurally Centre you will be put on an observation level.
1:1 within arm’s length or within eyesight
A member of staff will be with you at all times
Intermittent
A member of staff will be coming to check on you, this could be every 15 minutes
General
A member of staff will know where you are but will not be checking on you at set times.
A Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting takes place at Najurally Centre every Monday.
We will ask you if you want to come into your meeting or if there is anything you want the MDT to know.
The Doctors, Nurses, Psychologists and anyone else involved in your care discuss your week and review your:
- Medication
- Progress
- Discharge pathway
- Social care
- Accessing the community
Leave from Hospital
If you are informal you can leave hospital when you please.
If you are under the mental health act you need Section 17 Leave.
Section 17 leave
This is decided at the M.D.T. The responsible clinician will approve this.
Each patient has section 17 papers it will tell you where you are going, what time you can go and when you MUST return.
There are two types of leave which you can be written up for:
• Escorted
This is where a Staff member or Family member has been identified in your paperwork as someone who you can go on leave with.
• Unescorted
This is where you can go out on your own.

Treatment
While at the Najurally Centre you might be offered treatment this might be
• Medication
This is given out by a nurse at set times. The doctors prescribe medications.
You can speak to all the staff about your medications.
• Physical health
If you are physically unwell while at the Najurally Centre, a GP comes twice a week.
• Psychology sessions
This will be led by the psychologist Dr Sally Twist.
What should I bring to hospital?
Clothes
Please write your name in your clothing so it doesn’t go missing when it gets washed. Staff will assist you to wash your clothes.
Money
So that you can buy the things you need or activities which you may do.
Money can be kept safe in the Nurses Office safe.
Toiletries
The Najurally Centre don’t provide toiletries.
Electronics
You can have electrical items at the Najurally Centre. They will need to be tested before they can be put in your room. Some electrical items may need to be PAT tested before you can use them. Staff will assist you with this.
Mobile phone
Mobile phones should not be used on the ward, but can be used in your bedroom.
Mobile phones should be locked in the safe when not been used.
General Information
Activities
We have lots of activities on the ward these include Arts and Crafts, computer and DVD’s.
Activity Planners
These are made on a Sunday. Staff will sit with you to write down what you want to do. This will work alongside your section 17 leave.
Protected mealtimes
This is when we ask visitors to leave the ward so that everyone can eat. Food will be cooked for you at the Najurally Centre. Meal times are 12 till 1pm and 5pm till 6pm
Visiting Times
10am – 11:30am, 1pm – 4:30pm, 6pm – 7:30pm
We have visitor’s rooms where family can visit. Family should not be in patient bedrooms. Visitors under the age of 18 can visit in the off ward family room only.
Smoking –
The Najurally Centre has a no smoking policy in place. This applies to Staff and Visitors. There is a designated area for patients. Patient’s cigarettes and lighter must be kept in the nurse’s office.
Patients will be offered Nicotine replacement on admission to the Najurally Centre – These can be given to you on admission if needed.
Garden Access
There are two gardens which patients can access from both the lounges and conservatory. Staff might want to come outside with you to make sure you are safe.
Laundry
Staff will support you to complete your washing. Day clothes are washed on a night. Pyjamas are washed in the day.
Safe
There is a safe in the Nurses Office which is where
money and expensive belongings are kept.
Fire test
This is on a Tuesday. Staff will inform you it is happening and you will not have to leave the building.
If the fire alarm sounds at any other time you
should make your way to the nearest exist.
Patient Rights
The Mental Health Act 1983 this means two doctors think that you have a mental disorder and that you need to be in hospital so you can be given treatment and care.
If you have been detained you will be read your rights on admission. These will be read with you every 3 months. You will not be able to leave the hospital unless the doctor says it is ok.
Section 2
You can be kept in hospital up to 28 days for assessment. The doctors may feel you need to stay longer for treatment.
Section 3
You can be kept in hospital for up to 6 months so that you can be given the treatment you need. If your treatment is finished before this time or you say you are happy to stay, the section can stop and/or you can leave hospital.
There are other different types of sections which will be explained to you if they need to be.
Service User Involvement
The Najurally Centre has a Service user involvement meeting which is led by the patients. This gives you a voice to express your views and share your experiences.
Staff can come into this meeting and discuss ideas which they have.
Patients can also give ideas or complaints which they have about the service.
This happens once monthly and a poster will be put on the nursing office door of the date and time.
These things help people get along
Footwear to be worn on ward outside of bedroom.
Keep clothing on while on ward areas.
Inside voice on ward. Do not swear on ward. (no shouting/loud singing)
Do Not run on ward.
Do Not sit on the floor, use seats.
Do Not stand at the door during handover.
Listen to and work with staff.
Respect people’s personal space
