A decision on a multi-million-pound investment in Bradford’s main mental health hospital is expected shortly, to move to the next stage in a bid to secure national Government funding.

The proposed £90 million investment will create a best-in-class acute inpatient facility on the Lynfield Mount site to replace the main central building, and create a modern, therapeutic and inclusive patient environment, that destigmatises mental health.

It will replace the current central block that was designed in the 1950s when views of acute mental health care were very different from today, that does not support patient recovery and wellbeing.

Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust’s plans to redevelop the existing 77-bed unit will provide a new main entrance, with a bright welcoming reception area, more therapeutic spaces, wards with safer bed numbers and all en-suite bedrooms.  Safe outdoor garden spaces and recreational areas will support patient recovery and wellbeing, with additional areas for community use.

The development will achieve the NHS net-zero carbon standards and wider economic benefits. These include investments in local training, skills and suppliers, whilst reducing out-of-area bed placements and the significant maintenance costs for the current design.

The detailed plans that have been co-created with staff, service users, families and stakeholders will see a phased development of the specialist facility, that will serve communities across Bradford and Craven, alongside the Airedale Centre for Mental Health.
