Nurse retires after 55 years dedicated NHS service

As the NHS prepares to celebrate its 78th birthday on Sunday 5 July, a local nurse from Bingley is putting 55-years of NHS service behind her.
After a lifetime of caring for others, Savitri Cameron can finally find some time to relax with her family as she retires from her role as Advanced Nurse Practitioner with Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust’s Unplanned Care team.
Having qualified in Mauritius aged 20, Savitri landed at Heathrow in 1971 and made her way to a hospital in Scotland to start her first job in the NHS. This led to a variety of other roles as Savitri sought to broaden her skills and knowledge, working as a mental health nurse, a midwife and a health visitor. In her most recent role, she has worked with some of Bradford district’s most vulnerable people, diagnosing and treating acutely ill housebound patients.
Savitri has shown determination and selflessness throughout her career. The mum of two has worked tirelessly to reduce health inequalities and give a voice to people who are often overlooked.
Recognised as an exemplary nurse, her colleague Sarah Partington said: “Savitri’s passion and dedication has inspired me and many others over the years. She is a person who will always go the extra mile. She has helped to educate and train a multitude of staff over the years and has worked with numerous families to support service developments to improve the health outcomes of thousands of people.”
Having been born into a family that experienced poverty first-hand, Savitri’s desire to help those in need has been a life-long vocation.
During the Covid pandemic she not only worked many additional hours in vaccination centers but donated her earnings to the Trust’s Better Lives charity. The charity uses money donated and raised by its supporters to enhance care and support initiatives to improve the lives of patients, service users, carers, and staff, but which cannot be funded through core NHS budgets.
Savitri’s fundraising is likely to continue in retirement as she and her husband support local events as active members of the Bingley community and Rotary club.
Katie Blackburn, Operational Manager at the Care Trust said ‘Savitri has had a remarkable impact on both the people she has cared for and the colleagues she has supported throughout her career. Her commitment, compassion and willingness to go above and beyond for patients is truly admirable. She leaves a lasting legacy within our services, and her contribution will continue to inspire those who have had the privilege of working alongside her.’
