Beat Blue Monday: Tips for Mental Wellbeing from Bradford District and Craven Talking Therapies
Posted: 15 January 2025
As the festive season fades into memory and summer feels far away, it’s no wonder many of us struggle with the January blues. Blue Monday—dubbed the most miserable day of the year—falls on Monday, 20 January 2025. This day, derived in 2005 using a calculation involving factors like poor weather, financial worries, and low motivation, often highlights the challenges people face during this time of year.
To help combat the January slump, Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust is offering top tips for mental wellbeing, along with resources from Bradford District and Craven Talking Therapies. With support ranging from online tools to group courses, the service encourages everyone to take small, meaningful steps to boost their mood.
Naomi Holdsworth, Operations Service Manager at Bradford District and Craven Talking Therapies, says:
“We know January can be tough, but small changes can make a big difference. That’s why our tips help people feel more positive and stay mentally well. It’s important to remember, you’re not alone, and help is always available.”
Top tips for boosting your mood:
- Create a gratitude journal: write down three things you’re thankful for each day to focus on the positives in your life.
- Try the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique: This mindfulness practice helps you focus on the present by identifying five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste.
- Take a screen break: spend time away from your devices, particularly before bed, to improve your sleep and reduce stress.
- Adopt a new hobby: learning something new like cooking, knitting, or a musical instrument can improve mood and give you a sense of accomplishment.
- Connect through volunteering: helping others is a great way to boost your own wellbeing and create meaningful connections
- Stay active: even gentle activities like walking or yoga can release endorphins and improve mood.
- Eat well: incorporate mood-boosting foods like whole grains, leafy greens, and omega-3-rich fish.
- Get outside: even in colder weather, fresh air and sunlight can do wonders for mental health.
- Stay hydrated: drinking plenty of water helps maintain energy and focus.
