The Najurally Centre

About the service
We are a specialist assessment and treatment unit (ATU) for adults with moderate to severe learning disabilities and mental health problems whose needs cannot be supported at home, in the community, or in other adult mental health wards. We have eight beds and care for both males and females.
How to access
The Najurally Centre is part of a provider collaborative arrangement across West Yorkshire, accepting referrals from Barnsley, Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield.
To access the service a completed referral form should be sent to: assessmentandtreatmentunitsreferrals@bdct.nhs.uk

What to expect
Our friendly and skilled team is dedicated to providing care that is personalised to you. We bring together professionals from different areas, including psychiatrists, learning disability nurses, healthcare support workers, speech and language therapist, occupational therapist, and clinical psychologist. You can have a Mental Health Advocate to help you understand your rights.
We also work closely with your team from the community to help prepare for a smooth return back to your community as soon as possible.
We also make it a priority to involve your family and carers, building strong relationships to support you every step of the way.
While you are at the Najurally Centre we offer a wide range of specialist assessments designed to help us understand your mental health, well-being and behaviour and guide what treatments we can offer you. This includes health assessments, medication, communication support, positive behaviour support, and therapeutic activities.
Before making a referral
Check the eligibility criteria (email: assessmentandtreatmentunitsreferrals@bdct.nhs.uk)
Contact your local Intensive Support service for people with a learning disability for advice.
Check if there is a crisis and contingency plan about what to do if the person needs a mental health admission.
Check whether the person is on the local Dynamic Support Register.
Check whether a pre-admission Care and Treatment Review (CTR) or Local Area Escalation protocol (LEAP) meeting is needed.
Make sure the local Greenlight process is followed. Most people with a learning disability should be accessing mainstream mental health services.
Check that the person meets criteria for detention under the Mental Health Act (due to abnormally aggressive or harmful behaviour placing the person or others at serious risk of harm, and/or signs consistent with a diagnosable mental illness amenable to treatment in an inpatient mental health service).
Making a referral
Beds at the Najurally Centre are West Yorkshire system beds with an agreed referral process.
There is a single point of access for all referrals for an Assessment and Treatment Unit bed.
To refer a referral form has to be completed and sent to assessmentandtreatmentunitsreferrals@bdct.nhs.uk
Telephone referrals are not accepted.
Please use this email address to get a copy of the referral form and eligibility criteria.
All referrals are screened by the team (in working hours), and if appropriate a referral meeting will be set up to assess whether an ATU bed is needed.
Beds are available at 2 units: the Najurally Centre, Bradford and the Horizon Centre, Wakefield.
We always try to make sure people get a bed as close to home as possible, but this depends on bed availability.
