Paracetamol in pregnancy: no evidence of a link to autism
Posted: 01 October 2025
Recent US commentary suggesting that taking paracetamol in pregnancy may cause autism has caused understandable concern, but health experts and autism charities are clear: there is no credible evidence to support this claim; using paracetamol, in line with NHS advice, is safe.
The NHS website has advice on paracetamol use during pregnancy.
The UK medicines regulator, the MHRA, has confirmed paracetamol remains the recommended pain relief in pregnancy when used as directed.
The National Autistic Society has also issued a statement which is consistent with that of the MHRA.
Untreated pain or fever in pregnancy can be harmful, so safe symptom relief is essential. If you are pregnant or care for pregnant women, please continue to follow the NHS guidance.
