People who have recently received a dementia diagnosis and their families and carers are invited to find out about local support at a dementia information event being held at Shipley Library from 12.00pm-2.00pm on Wednesday 27 March.

Hosted by Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust, the event includes a short, informative and myth-busting presentation about dementia, followed by an opportunity to ask questions and talk to different teams, services and groups about what they offer to people with dementia and their families or carers.

This is the first of a number of similar events to be held at Shipley Library with local organisations such as Carers’ Resource, Community Links, Bradford Libraries, Affinity Care and Pathways, Bradford Metropolitan District Council Social Services, and University of Bradford Research Team, taking part as well as specialist Admiral Nurses from Dementia UK who work in the Care Trust’s Proactive Care Team and members of the Trust’s library, research and palliative care teams.

Admiral Nurse team leader James Emmett said: “Dementia doesn’t just affect the person with the diagnosis – carers, family and friends are also living with the effects of the condition, which can feel difficult and frightening. We want to help everyone dealing with this to face the future with positivity – so please do come along for a friendly chat and a cuppa.”

Advice on living well with dementia is at the heart of the event, with professionals sharing proven resources and activities, as well as ensuring carers are aware of the support available to them.

The Bunton family, Chandelle, Shelly and Philip popped along to a previous event with mum Susan to find activities for her to become involved in. “I go walking and out for coffee, but when I’m at home I get so bored,” says Susan. They met with Community Links and a a home visit was organized to assess Susan’s needs and suggest local groups and activities she might enjoy.

Sisters Sally Leng and Helen Kiely also attended a previous event to find out about help for their dad. They came away surprised to find “there’s so much help for carers – we didn’t even think about that.”

Another attendant from Bingley said: “It was really useful. You meet real people who deal with real everyday events and will answer your questions about anything. I so nearly didn’t come, but I’m glad I did.”
