New Lynfield Mount Hospital wards to be named following patient and staff survey

Names for two new upcoming ward areas at Lynfield Mount Hospital have been chosen by Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust colleagues, people who currently use the Trust’s services and involvement partners.

The Bradford hospital that provides specialist mental health support for people in Bradford, Keighley, Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven is currently undergoing a £65 million redevelopment.

The redevelopment of the site will help to create a facility that better supports the people who use Lynfield Mount Hospital’s services and includes the creation of a new two-storey, two-ward block, in addition to the refurbishment of the bedrooms on two of the hospital’s existing wards.

Building on the tree and water naming convention used across existing wards like Ashbrook, Oakburn and Maplebeck, staff members put forward a range of suggested names. These were then narrowed down to a shortlist, from which 269 staff members and service users voted for their two preferred options.

The two new ward areas, which will be named Cherrydene and Hazeldale, will have 100 percent en-suite facilities that will significantly enhance the experience of people staying within the hospital.

The modernised spaces will also help to improve the working environment for colleagues.

In addition to complementing the existing wards, the new nature inspired names also reflect the colour palettes and themes that were preferred by staff and service users who attended the interior design sessions held by P+HS architects in spring 2026.

Louise Rigg, Project Director for the Lynfield Mount Hospital redevelopment said:

“When choosing the names for the new wards, we wanted something that highlights the redevelopment’s focus on recovery and wellbeing.

“We know that bringing nature into your life can have a positive impact on your mental health and physical wellbeing and we wanted the identity of the wards to reflect that.

“During the interior design sessions, the majority of staff and patients were favouring nature-inspired finishes for both ward and communal areas, so we felt that continuing the existing tree and water naming convention felt like a natural way to reflect these themes as well as maintaining a connection to the current building.

“We are looking forward to seeing these wards come to life as the work on new modular building progresses and the positive impact the new environments will have on the people who use the Trust’s services.”

The construction of the new modular ward block is expected to be completed in autumn 2027, with the overall redevelopment scheduled for completion in spring 2029.
