About the service
Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust is committed to developing and undertaking research programmes that enable us to deliver high quality, evidence-based care and services to people in our local community. Our aims are to:
- Produce high quality research that will benefit local services and local people but will also make a significant contribution to building the evidence base.
- Build a strong link between research and practice that allows ideas for research to be generated, and develops research results into best practice.
- Contribute to a national profile in mental health, learning disability and primary care research.
- Facilitate collaborations between academic partners and aim to attract increased funding and high calibre research and researchers.
- Actively include service users and carers at all levels of research activity.
To help us achieve this, our dedicated team of research professionals support high quality health research that reflects the diversity of our local population and paves the way for next generation care.
The Health Research Authority (HRA) governs and underpins research in the UK through a number of roles, including co-developing the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research, which outlines the principles of good practice for research. Take part in new research
We have a number of new studies within the Trust that the Research and Development team are currently working on. If you’re interested in taking part in research, have patients who may be interested in taking part, or would just like to find out more about our new studies, please use the links below.
If you would like more information about the study or would like to take part, please contact your doctor or nurse to discuss.
Research is an essential part of improving the quality of care we provide. Our clinical services work closely with our research team. Research team staff may review your records and discuss with your clinician if they think there are studies that you would be suitable for. If there are, research staff may contact you to make you aware of them- but participation in research is always optional. If you would like to know more – or if you do not wish to be considered for or contacted about research, please tell your clinician, or contact the Research Office: research@bdct.nhs.uk

What is the aim of the study?
The aim of the project is to find out whether computerised hearing tests can help in the diagnosis of people attending memory clinics. The research team hope that this will allow earlier access to diagnosis, treatment and support for those with dementia, and earlier reassurance for those without dementia.
What happens if a patient wants to take part?
The patient will be asked to attend a baseline appointment, which takes approximately 2 hours. At the appointment the patient will undergo cognitive tests, two hearing tests and also their bloods will be taken.
This is repeated at 12 and 24 months after the initial appointment.
More information can be found in the participant information sheet, attached below.
Inclusion criteria
Participant is attending a memory clinic for evaluation of whether they might be suffering from dementia or participant is a healthy control subject from the same age range as the memory clinic sample.
and
The participant is willing to take part in the study and over 18 years of age.

What is the aim of the study?
One in three people with psychosis experience visual hallucinations. Surprisingly, little is known about these experiences.
This study aims to develop an understanding of visions in two ways:
- Develop a new measure exploring peoples beliefs about visions.
- Explore the relationships between visions and other issues such as poor sleep and high worry.
What does the study involve?
You/your patient will be asked to complete an assessment pack on a range of measure, which takes approximately 30-45 minutes. This can be done with support from the research team or on your own.
Some people will also be asked to repeat a small version of the assessment pack a week later.
Everyone taking part in the study will also be given £10 gift voucher.
Inclusion criteria
Participants must be aged between 16 and 65 and must have psychosis and currently experiencing visions (present within the last 4 weeks).
If you would like more information, would like to take part in the study or would like to refer a patient, please e-mail research@bdct.nhs.uk

The EDGI study wants to improve our understanding of the genetic and environmental factors behind eating disorders. The study will involve completing questionnaires about your demographics, emotional wellbeing, health and lifestyle, personality, and experiences of an eating disorder. These questionnaires will take around 30-45 minutes to complete. In addition, you will also be asked to provide either a saliva sample or blood sample.
Inclusion criteria
Participant must be over 16 years of age, live in England and has experienced any eating disorder (no clinical diagnosis is required).
For more information please contact the research team – research@bdct.nhs.uk

We need healthy volunteers, people with memory problems, people with Parkinson’s disease, and stroke survivors to take part in the study.
This study is developing a new computer program to help improve the quality of care for people who may be experiencing changes to their thinking and memory.
The study will involve having a conversation with a virtual computerised doctor. This can be in person with a researcher or at home.
You will also be asked to undertake routine mood and thinking assessments.Inclusion criteria
Participants must be aged 18 or over and have the capacity to consent.
For more information or to take part please email Research@bdct.nhs.uk

What is the study?
A new study open to all staff who work within mental crisis services with children and young people up to the age of 25. The researchers would like to speak to people with experience of using and/or providing these services to find out what you think about crisis services. To do this, we would like to invite you to have a conversation (interview).
What happens if I take part?
You will be invited to a 90 minute online interview to discuss your experiences of the development, organisation and normalisation of approaches to mental health crisis care. Anything you say will be treated confidentially and your name will not be published in any reports. You will also receive a £15 gift voucher for taking part.
For more information visit our form for the mental health crisis care services study or contact ireen.mumba@bdct.nhs.uk

What is the study?
There is some evidence that points to the body’s immune system being one of the causes of psychosis. Approximately 6-9% of patients with psychosis may be caused by pathogenic anti-neuronal membrane antibodies.
Affected patients may respond to immunotherapy and its efficacy and safety is being tested in SINAPPS2 treatment trial.
Inclusion criteria
Participants must be aged 16 to 60 and have acute psychotic symptom(s) lasting more than 2 weeks but no longer than 2 years in current episode (first episode of psychosis or relapse after at least 6 month of remission)
Exclusion criteria
Participants with any neurological disorder (*Including multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, cerebrovascular disease, hydrocephalus, traumatic brain injury, meningo-encephalitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, CNS vasculitis) or people that are pregnant.
Guidance for researchers
Research is defined in the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research as ‘the attempt to derive generalisable or transferable new knowledge to answer or refine relevant questions with scientifically sound methods. This excludes: audit, needs assessments, quality improvement and other local service evaluations.’
If you are unsure whether your proposed project meets this definition, click on the link and you will be presented with a short series of ‘yes’ and ‘no’ questions to help you decide – Is my study research?
The links below may also help with how to get started in research, undertaking GCP training and also a guide to becoming an Associate Principle Investigator. If you have any questions please e-mail research@bdct.nhs.uk
