A simple five-step preparation process, developed by our School Nursing Special Needs team, is helping children with social, communication or learning difficulties to feel less stressed about having a vaccination, supporting them to keep well and healthy in future.

It's good to talk

Nurses in the five teams that make up the City Cluster are talking more regularly and finding staffing issues are eased as a result.

The five teams of district nurses used to work individually, but since implementing the new Reportout system they are able to talk through any risks and staffing issues in advance and take appropriate action.

Nurses sprint through vaccination marathon

Vaccinating local children against flu in 173 primary schools across our patch during October and November is always a full-on task, organised months in advance with schools and the school nursing team. A national shortage of the nasal spray vaccine towards the end of 2019 meant the first planned week of vaccinations had to be cancelled, so children at 30 schools in our area could not be vaccinated according to plan.
