Learning Disabilities
This service is for people with learning disabilities once their formal education ends. We provide residential, day and domestic care and support our service users with employment, housing and liaison with non-statutory organisations.
Accommodation
Residential Care Services
The Trust provides two Residential Care Homes in Bradford and one in Keighly:
- Reevy Road Residential Care Home
- Weaver Court Residential Care Home
- Rix House Residential Care Home
These homes provide accommodation for up to sixty-four service users between the ages of 15 and 80. All our care homes are registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection.
Inpatient Unit
The Highfield Unit at Lynfield Mount Hospital provides a 10 bed purpose built assessment and treatment facility for learning disabled adults who have co-existing mental health problems.
Residential Nursing Care
31 places are provided for service users with severe learning disabilities, in partnership with Yorkshire Housing Group. These are spread across two sites:
- Sheldon Ridge
- Ashfield House
In addition, the Trust provides specialist input in nursing homes, with a range of specialists and professionals from health and social care disciplines.
Newhall-Knowles Court
This residential care home houses 21 service users, and is run in partnership with BUPA Care Services who employ all the care staff. It specialises in providing services to individuals who tend to be older with age associated higher dependencies.
Supported Accommodation Services
The Trust provides a supported accommodation service to three geographical areas - Bradford North/South, Bradford West and Shipley/Keighley.
There are 63 one, two or three bedroomed properties, one 10 bedded property and one 6 bedded property. There are 147 service users living in the properties and accessing the Care Trust's services.
The properties are spread throughout Bradford and Keighley districts, with some situated in Ilkley and Burley in Wharfedale.
Properties are owned by a number of housing associations, Bradford Community Housing Trust and several individual landlords.
Bradford District Care Trust is registered with Commission for Social Inspection as a Domiciliary Care Agency.
Challenging Behaviour and Respite Services
Challenging Behaviour Nursing Homes
28 beds are available to residents with challenging care needs provided from:
- Branwell Lodge Nursing Home
- Halifax Road Nursing Home
Care is provided by specialist teams on a 24-hour basis.
Challenging Behaviour Day Services
63 day placements areavailable from:
- New Ridge
- Low Moor Day Service
Opportunities also available within community locations, and are integrated with residential and supported living services. The service aiming to deliver greater choice, inclusion and independence to all service users.
Respite Services
Respite breaks are considered key to enabling carers to continue looking after a family member at home. Properties are owned by Bradford Metropolitan District Council and staff are employed by the Care Trust.
Services are provided from 3 units:
- Whiteoak – provides 15 beds within three suites:
- Supports service users with complex health needs and challenging behaviour as well as catering for generic needs
- Provision of respite for approximately 90 service use
- Copwood and Old Park Road:
- 6-bedded respite units for adults who have learning disabilities
Learning Disability Day Services
Day services provides care for over 1000 adults with learning disabilities. It includes seven community services, four large day centres and fourteen community based units.
Services are organised within the following broad headings:
- Supported Employment and Signposting Services
- Sheltered Work and Community Projects
- Services to Older People who have Learning Disabilities
- Services to People with Higher Support Needs and PMLD
- Asian Womens’ Day Service
A transport service is arranged with by Bradford Metropolitan Council and Serco.
Clinical Liaison Team
The clinical liaison team is a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals based at Waddiloves Health Centre. They provide a range of therapeutic services designed to be responsive, timely, and geared to meet the changing needs of users. Services include:
- Consultation
- Hydrotherapy
- Counselling
- Assessment and wide ranging treatments
Clinicians work in partnership with care providers and families in order to provide a comprehensive, holistic approach.
Community Team Learning Disabilities (CTLD)
The CTLD team comprises of 35 Social Workers and Nurses responsible for care management throughout Bradford, and Airedale.
Individuals and their families/carers are supported by the team in assessing suitability for services, and helping to access benefits. They also provide support to school leavers during transition between child and adult services.
Reviews are delivered by the Core Review Team which is significant in monitoring the effectiveness of care and service provision.
Behavioural Outreach Team
This is a small team offering assessment and support for learning disabled people with challenging behaviour. They help input to the Care Planning process. Referrals to the team tend to occur during points of crisis.
Waddiloves Health Centre
Services are clinic based following a health centre model and include:
- Dental
- Podiatry
- Audiology
- Orthoptics
- Well Persons Clinics
- Psychiatry
An emphasis is upon people with learning disabilities who have difficulty accessing mainstream services. The aim is educate, and desensitise service users who may experience difficulties when undergoing treatments. The service won a national award for addressing Social Inclusion in 2001.
